Tell Us Your Story - December '10

Hancock Friends of the Parks

By Bob Howard, Past Co-chair of Hancock Friends of the Parks
Murrieta, CA

Serving as co-chairman of the Hancock Friends of the Parks brings back many memories with bus trips, working at the "Doc" Phillips Discovery Center on Sunday afternoons and other events.  The Discovery Center was special to me because Doc was by biology teacher in high school and was what got me interested in bird watching and being a member of his bird study club.

The events at Litzenberg Memorial Woods, cooking pancakes and sausage and tapping trees at Maple Sugarin' Day, making apple cider, planting trees, the garden and the events at Riverbend with campfires, kids fishing derbies and many other events were great events to volunteers at.

The event I really enjoyed was the Summer Concerts at Riverside Park, popping popcorn on Wednesday morning with many friends of the parks, and then working with Dick Daugherty, John Marshall and other WFIN employees each Wednesday night during the summer concert series. Seeing all the residents of Findlay and Hancock County, especially the residents of the nursing homes enjoying the concert and eating popcorn.

Working with Tim, Paula, Margie and all of the park rangers and staff was always a great experience and something I will always cherish.
