Outdoor Recreation

The Hancock Park District provides a variety of outdoor recreational activities for visitors to enjoy the parks.  Please check the Activities Chart for available activities and locations.

 

 

PRIMITIVE CAMPING AT RIVERBEND
A class "C" primitive campground,  located at Riverbend Recreation Area, provides tent camping with picnic tables, trash containers and waste water drains located along the edge of the woods. Camping permits must be obtained in advance of arrival at HPD Headquarters. Length of stay is limited to seven days within a given month. Parking is available in the Big Oaks Parking Lot. RV's are not permitted overnight in parking lots and no vehicles in the campgrounds.  All gear must be carried in. Water is available seasonally, near shelter #1. Pets allowed, but must be under voice control and on a leash leash no longer than six feet. Camp visitors must leave by dark, unless prior approval has been granted. Adults must accompany juvenile campers under 18 years of age. Fires permitted in fire rings only.  Firewood must be brought in. DISC GOLF COURSE AT RIVERBEND (18 holes)
An 18-hole disc golf course is available at Riverbend Recreation Area. The course trailhead is located in the Big Oaks Area near Shelter #3.  You must bring your own disc.  Discs are not provided at the site.  Volunteer members of the Disc Golf Community Association conduct year around events and tournaments for all levels of experience.  Please check our monthly calendar for events and workshops conducted by the local disc golf group.

BVC Fishing DayPUBLIC FISHING IN THE PARKS
Loaner poles and miscellaneous fishing equipment are available through the HPD office just by asking. Please call 419-425-PARK/7275 to make advance arrangements before picking up. There is no charge for rental. State fishing rules and regulations apply for all users. Fishing access located throughout the Old Mill Stream Parkway location. Check Activities Chart for locations.

GEOCACHING/LETTER BOXING
Park visitors are welcome to participate in “Geocaching” and “Letter Boxing” activities in the Hancock Park District. Both activities are a ‘sport” with traditions, courtesies and rules appropriate for the parks.

HORSESHOE PITS AT RIVERBEND
Horseshoe pits are located at Riverbend Recreation Area in the Big Oaks Area, shelter 1. Horseshoes are available first come, first serve, but must be requested in advance to arrange pick-up and returning the shoes.

CREATIVE PLAYGROUNDS
A variety of playgrounds are located throughout the Parks System at park areas. Creative playgrounds are suitable for a range of ages. Check Activities Chart for locations.

VOLLEYBALL COURTS (sand)
Three sand volleyball courts are available first come, first served at Riverbend Recreation Area. Nets are up typically April through October, weather dependant. Players must provide their own ball. Courts cannot be reserved.
