Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center is open from December through March on weekends (Saturdays & Sundays)and some holidays from 11 AM to 5 PM when weather conditions are suitable. Good snow conditions consist of at least 4-6 inches of a solid snow base.
The winter concession is located at RIVERBEND RECREATION AREA in the Big Oaks Area in shelter #3. The concession offers cross-country ski and snowshoe equipment rentals. The concession is open to the general public with rentals provided on a first come, first served basis. The center operates seasonally during good snow conditions, 4-6 inches of a good solid snow base. Participants can enjoy warm refreshments and a warm fire afterwards inside the concession area of Shelter 3. Other times may be added as good conditions present themselves. Reach the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center concession during open hours to check conditions by calling 419-424-1555 or you can check the Park District's website calendar for updates.
FEES: Hourly rates are set at $7.00 per hour or $20.00 for the entire day. HPD accepts checks (preferred), made payable to Hancock Park District or cash in small denominations (exact cash is appreciated). Rental fees are paid when equipment is rented at the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center.
- "Night Ski" cross-country skiing events take place primarily in January and February. During Night Ski events, skiers meet at the Riverbend Recreation Area's Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center in shelter #3 located in the Big Oaks area. The Hancock Park District offers Night Ski events during the snow season as long as there are good snow conditions. Typically, good snow conditions consist of 4-6 inches or more of a solid snow base. Some areas will be lit by luminaries along the way through the snowy trails of Riverbend. Interested and experienced only skiers can just show up at the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center; no pre-registration is required. The cost is $10 if you rent the Hancock Park District's equipment. If you have your own equipment, there is no charge. This event is not recommended for first time skiers or for younger children.
- "Beginner Cross-Country Ski Workshops" is a Hancock Park District Leisure Education Initiative. Workshops take place on Saturday mornings from 9 AM-10:30 AM. Pre-registration and payments are required at the Hancock Park District office no later than the Friday before each Saturday session. Workshop participants meet at the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center in shelter 3 located in the Big Oaks area. HPD will explain and demonstrate the basic ski techniques such as the proper ways to use ski equipment, how to glide, climb hills, how to get up when you fall down, how to turn around, and how to get into a good rhythm. It is suggested that all participants wear layered clothing including hats and gloves to keep you warm and dry. Workshops require at least 4-6 inches of a good solid snow base or they will be cancelled.
- Group Reservations can be made for groups of eight or more during non-public open dates and times. You can call or stop in the HPD office for all of the details.
- All day rentals are offered and you are encouraged to explore not only Riverbend Recreation Area, but also other locations in Hancock County throughout the week. Simply call or stop in the HPD office during normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8 AM-4:30 PM except on holidays.
