Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center is open from December through March on weekends and some holidays from 11 AM to 5 PM, weather conditions permitting. During the ski season, please call the center at 419-424-1555 before you go as ground and weather conditions change.
The concession is located at RIVERBEND RECREATION AREA in Big Oaks Area at Shelter #3. The concession offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing equipment rentals. The concession is open to the general public with rentals provided on a first come, first served basis. The center operates seasonally during good snow conditions (4+ inches) from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Participants can enjoy warm refreshments and a warm fire afterwards inside the concession area of Shelter 3. Other times may be added as good conditions present themselves. FEES: Hourly rates for 2014-15 season were set at $7.00 per hour, or $20.00 for all day. HPD accepts checks (preferred), made payable to Hancock Park District, or cash in small denominations. The exact amount is appreciated. Rental fees are paid when equipment is rented at the winter sports center. HPD no longer accepts any bills larger than $20 denomination for facility reservations, program fees, and concession fees (ski rentals, boat rentals, and hayrides).
- "Night Ski" cross country ski hikes were to be held at Riverbend Recreation Area on Saturday evenings from 7 PM-9 PM. However, event dates for 2015 have concluded. When a Night Ski is held, skiers meet in the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center, at Shelter 3, located in the Big Oaks area. Skiers would enjoy ski trails at night at Riverbend! The Hancock Park District were offering night skis during the snow season, as long as there were good snow conditions with a snow base of 4 inches or more. Some areas would be lit by luminaries along the way through the snowy trails. All skiers needed to do was show up at the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center and bring $5 if you have your own ski equipment, or $10 if ski equipment rental was needed. This event was not recommended for first time skiers or for younger children.
- "Beginner Cross-Country Ski Workshops" were conducted on Saturday mornings from 9 AM-10:30 AM. However, event dates for 2015 have concluded. Skiers meet at the Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center, at Shelter 3, located in the Big Oaks area. Advance sign-up and payment for a Saturday of snowy fun was required! HPD would explain and demonstrate the basic ski techniques such as the proper ways to use ski equipment, how to glide, climb hills, how to get up when you fall down, how to turn around, and how to get into a good rhythm. It is suggested that all participants wear layered clothing, including hats and gloves to keep you warm and dry. Children were required to be at least 8 years of age with a participating adult. Ski rates (including equipment rental) was $12 per person. Register with payment was required by noon the Friday before each workshop at the HPD office. Workshops required at least 3-5 inches of a good solid snow base.
- Group Reservations can be made for groups of eight or more during non-public open dates and times. Call the HPD office for details.
- All day rentals can be arranged to take equipment to other locations in Hancock County throughout the week by calling the HPD office, during normal busines hours, Monday through Friday, 8 AM-4:30 PM.
